frozen AC

As the primary component of an air conditioning unit, a condenser is responsible for circulating cool air throughout your space. To keep your indoor climate as comfortable as possible, you need to have effective AC coils that efficiently move heat from your HVAC system to your room. However, with so many factors coming together to cause an AC coil to stop working and require air conditioning services, it can be challenging to know what’s causing them.

Wow Services is a professional HVAC company specializing in air conditioning repair in Temecula, CA. In our experience, these are some of the most common causes of frozen coils.

Polluted Air

If your indoor climate is hot and humid, you’re likely experiencing “foul” air made up of a variety of pollutants that can cause your AC coils to freeze. Schedule regular air conditioning maintenance to remedy this.

Defective Control Valve

This can happen when your indoor climate has a high relative humidity. With so much moisture in the air, you may be experiencing a “wet bulb” effect, where the Inside Air Temperature (IAT) sensor in your indoor thermostat reads a higher temperature than your room. This is caused by water from the humidifier getting ducted through your air conditioner.

To correct this, the air conditioning installation crew may increase the air velocity in your room and/or decrease the amount of moisture in the air.

Faulty Transformer

This can happen when your HVAC system is mis-wired, among other things. If there are any signs of mechanical failure, you might need an air conditioning replacement. After the transformer is replaced, screw the main transformer back into the electrical wall outlet and test the system to see if it works.

Improper Maintenance

AC coils can freeze due to the accumulation of dirt, dust, and other debris on the coil. Over time, this will cause the coil to become less efficient and eventually freeze. AC coils should be checked every six months to ensure they are in good condition and functioning correctly.
